Tooth Extraction

Tooth Extraction in Johor Bahru – When and Why It’s Needed
At TAG Dental Clinic Johor Bahru, our priority is always to preserve your natural teeth. However, in some cases, tooth extraction becomes the safest and most effective solution for maintaining overall oral health.
Tooth extraction may be recommended when a tooth is too damaged to be saved due to decay, trauma, or infection. But there are also several other common reasons:
- Extra teeth that block others from coming in properly
- Preparing for orthodontic treatment, such as braces, where space is needed
- Wisdom teeth that are impacted, decayed, or causing pain
- Infection that has spread beyond repair and risks affecting surrounding areas
- Gum disease that weakens the supporting bone and tissues around a tooth
Our team, led by Dr. Moustafa, will carefully evaluate your condition using digital X-rays and a clinical exam before suggesting extraction as the best course of action.
We offer both simple and surgical extractions depending on the condition of your tooth:
1. Simple ExtractionUsed when the tooth is visible in the mouth and can be removed without any surgical intervention. Dr. Moustafa will gently loosen the tooth using a tool called an elevator and remove it with dental forceps.
2. Surgical Extraction (including Wisdom Teeth Removal)
Required when the tooth has broken off at the gumline or hasn’t fully erupted (common with wisdom teeth). A small incision is made in the gum to remove the tooth. In some cases, it may be necessary to remove a bit of bone or divide the tooth before removal.
Understanding Wisdom TeethWisdom teeth are the last molars to develop, usually between the ages of 17 to 25. Since they appear late, they often don’t have enough room to erupt properly, leading to:
- Impaction (trapped under gums or bone)
- Partial eruption (which increases the risk of infection)
- Crowding or misalignment of other teeth
- Swelling, pain, or jaw stiffness
At TAG Dental Clinic Johor Bahru, we often recommend wisdom tooth extraction before complications arise, especially for younger adults.
Wisdom tooth extraction is a common procedure performed under local anesthesia. After the area is numbed:
- An incision is made in the gum (if the tooth hasn’t erupted)
- The tooth may be sectioned or surrounded bone gently trimmed
- Once the tooth is removed, gauze is placed to manage bleeding
You’ll be given aftercare instructions and follow-up support to ensure a smooth recovery.
- Bite gently on gauze for 30–45 minutes to control bleeding
- Avoid smoking, vigorous rinsing, or using straws for 24 hours
- Stick to soft foods and drink plenty of water
- Apply cold compresses if swelling occurs
- Take prescribed medication as advised
Dr. Moustafa and the team will provide personalized care instructions and remain available for any post-treatment concerns.
